Do Mug Warmers Work? An Honest Guide

Smart mug warmer in pink

If you've ever found a full, stone-cold cup of tea on your desk, a mug warmer probably sounds like a good idea. But do they actually work? Here's an honest look.

How does a mug warmer work?

A mug warmer is a small heated plate. You put your mug on top, and the plate gently warms the bottom of the mug to stop the drink cooling down.

Do they keep drinks hot?

A mug warmer is designed to keep a hot drink warm, not to heat a cold one from scratch. Put your tea or coffee on it straight after making it and it will stay pleasantly warm for much longer than it would on its own.

Which mugs work best?

  • Flat-bottomed mugs work best, because more of the base touches the plate.
  • Ceramic and glass mugs work well.
  • Double-walled or insulated travel cups don't work well, as the insulation stops the heat getting through.

Top tip: keep a lid or saucer on top. Most heat escapes from the surface of the drink, so covering it helps it stay warm much longer.

Are they safe?

Look for one with an auto shut-off. Ours switches itself off after 8 hours, so it won't stay on overnight if you forget about it. Always follow the instructions in the box.
